Youth T Shirt Size Chart: Kids’ Measurements & Fit Guide

Youth T Shirt Size Chart: How to Measure and Choose Kids’ Sizes

To use a Youth T Shirt Size Chart, compare your measurements with the matching chart type. A body chart describes the wearer; a garment chart describes the shirt. For a garment chart, check width and length against a well-fitting tee, then confirm that the chart belongs to the product you plan to buy.

A medium label is a starting point. The useful information is how that particular shirt measures and whether its proportions suit the wearer. This matters when buying one tee, collecting sizes for a school order or developing a children’s clothing range.

The example below uses a named brand’s published garment chart. Follow it as a measurement example, then check the current information for your selected style.

Youth T Shirt Size Chart in Inches and Centimeters

The following dimensions come from the youth chart linked on Gildan’s US G5000B product page. They describe garment width and length for S–XL. They are not body chest measurements or Asia Sourcing’s own specifications.

Youth size Garment width, inches Garment width, cm Garment length, inches Garment length, cm
S 16 40.6 20.5 52.1
M 17 43.2 22 55.9
L 18 45.7 23.5 59.7
XL 19 48.3 25 63.5

How to Read the Width and Length Columns

Read each row across. Width describes the horizontal garment dimension shown in the source diagram; length describes its vertical dimension. Check both before deciding which row is closest to a reference shirt.

Keep inches and centimeters consistent during comparison. The converted figures make the chart easier to use with a metric tape; their decimal places do not establish a production tolerance.

For a different style, open that product’s chart. Keep its size labels, measurement definitions and dimensions together rather than combining rows from several sources.

Body Measurements vs. T-Shirt Measurements

Before using a kids T-shirt size chart, look for the measuring instructions. “Chest” can refer to a measurement around a person or a dimension across a garment. Comparing the two directly can lead to the wrong size.

Body Chest Circumference

A body chest measurement goes around the wearer. For example, SanMar’s PC54Y measurement instructions describe measuring around the fullest chest area beneath the arms, with the arms down and the tape level.

Use a body measurement with a chart that explicitly describes body dimensions. Keep the tape in the stated position and record the unit. If the chart includes another measurement, take that separately instead of estimating it from chest size.

Flat Garment Width

Flat width measures across the shirt laid on a surface. SanMar’s example measures its product chest width one inch below the armhole and lists those product dimensions separately from its body-size chart.

That measuring point belongs to the stated specification. Use the method supplied for the garment you are checking. Halving a child’s chest measurement does not establish the finished-shirt width they need; the garment must also provide the intended fit and room for movement.

A simple note beside your measurements—“body circumference” or “flat garment width”—helps prevent confusion when sharing them with a retailer or supplier.

How to Measure a Well-Fitting Kids’ T-Shirt

Choose a reference tee that fits the wearer as intended. A favorite shirt that has become too short is useful for identifying a problem, but its dimensions should not automatically become the target for the replacement.

Lay the Shirt Flat and Check the Measurement Points

  1. Place the shirt on a flat surface and smooth obvious wrinkles without pulling the fabric wider or longer.
  2. Open the selected product’s measuring guide. Identify where its width line and length line begin and end.
  3. Record whether the reference shirt has been washed. For sample comparisons, keep that condition with the measurement record.

Gather a tape measure, the chart and somewhere to record each value. Photographing the tape position can help a buyer and supplier discuss the same measuring point, although the written measurements are still needed.

Record Width and Length Separately

Measure across the shirt at the specified width position. Then measure length using the starting point in the brand’s diagram or instructions. A high-point-shoulder length and a length taken from another neckline position should not be treated as interchangeable.

Write down the two results with their units. If the fabric or tape moved, lay the shirt out again and repeat the measurement. Keep any other dimensions, such as sleeve length, in separately labeled fields when the supplier provides a matching method.

Compare Like Measurements

Compare your garment measurements with garment columns. For a body-size chart, measure the wearer and use its body columns instead.

As a hypothetical example, suppose a reference tee measures 16.5 inches wide and 21.5 inches long using comparable points. In the chart above, S is smaller in both dimensions, while M is larger in both. That makes M a useful option to examine, but a fit check still matters. The reference shirt’s cut and the intended amount of room also affect the choice.

Choosing Between Youth Sizes

A shirt can have the desired width and an unsuitable length. Increasing the label size changes more than one dimension, so compare the whole row before ordering.

Check Fit and Intended Use

Think about how the tee will be worn. A relaxed everyday fit and a closer-fitting style may need different proportions even for the same child. Check the actual shirt through the shoulders and body, and review its length when worn.

During a fitting, ask the wearer to sit, reach and raise their arms comfortably. Look for pulling, a restrictive neck opening, unwanted sleeve tightness or a hem that moves beyond the intended position. Record the specific issue rather than describing everything as “too small.”

For a school or group order, give families the chart for the exact selected product. Ask them to check measurements before submitting a size. A collection of labels from different brands is a weak basis for one bulk order.

Check the Product’s Care and Fit Information

Read the selected garment’s care instructions. CottonWorks’ guidance on shrinkage and skewing explains how dimensional change can affect fabric and garment fit.

Compare samples under the agreed care conditions. Avoid assuming a fixed shrinkage percentage or buying an extra size to compensate for an unknown result. For a sourcing order, record the measurements before and after the agreed care check so any adjustment follows evidence from the sample.

Youth, Toddler and Adult Size Labels

Check the size system on the product page before using its chart. A toddler label, a youth letter size and an adult letter size do not supply a shared set of dimensions.

If you need a toddler T-shirt size chart, use the selected toddler product’s information. Do not extend the S–XL example above into younger sizes by guessing smaller increments. Likewise, an age printed beside a size is only as useful as the brand’s accompanying guidance.

A youth XL may be worth comparing with an adult small, but the labels alone cannot establish equivalence. Put the actual width and length measurements side by side, then check the cut, shoulders and sleeves. One may provide the desired width with a different body length. Choose the garment that suits the wearer rather than treating the two labels as an automatic conversion.

What Buyers Should Confirm Before Sampling Kids’ T-Shirts

For a brand or retail collection, a public chart helps explain sizing. A production brief needs measurements tied to the proposed style and an agreed sample.

Before starting a kids’ knitted T-shirt sourcing discussion, prepare the following:

  1. Style and intended fit. Include a drawing or reference image, the proposed size range and the fit you want. Identify which sample or garment represents that fit.
  2. Measurement definitions. State each measuring point and unit. Keep body requirements separate from finished-garment measurements so both sides know what is being specified.
  3. Reference condition. Identify the sample by style, size and version. Record whether it was measured before or after washing and which care process was used.
  4. Size development. Agree the measurement specification across the intended range. Confirm the grading approach with the supplier rather than expanding one size by an assumed universal increment.
  5. Acceptance and review. Agree measurement tolerances, care checks and the approval process. Keep fit comments specific enough to guide a revision.

Review the updated sample against the recorded comments. For example, “increase body length while retaining the approved chest width” communicates a different request from “make the shirt bigger.” Keep the approved version identifiable so later samples are checked against the same reference.

When planning a wider kids’ tops collection, prepare separate measurement requirements for T-shirts, polos and woven shirts. The same size label does not make their construction or fit requirements interchangeable.

Youth T-Shirt Sizing FAQs

What Measurements Should I Check for a Youth T-Shirt?

For a garment chart like the example above, check width and length using the stated measuring points. If the product instead provides body measurements, measure the wearer as instructed. Review any additional dimensions supplied for that style, and use a fit check where possible.

Can I Choose a Youth T-Shirt Size by Age Alone?

Age can help you locate a brand’s suggested range, but measurements give a clearer basis for choosing. Check the actual chart and compare it with the wearer or a well-fitting shirt, depending on the chart type. Do not add guessed age equivalents to a chart that provides none.

Is a Youth XL the Same as an Adult Small?

There is no automatic match. Compare the two products’ actual dimensions and their measuring methods. A shirt that offers a similar width may have a different length or sleeve proportion. Use the specifications for the particular styles rather than a general letter-size conversion.

Can I Use One Size Chart for Every T-Shirt Brand?

Use the chart supplied for the product you intend to order. Keep a reference shirt’s measurements for comparison, but check each new chart’s method and units. Reusing one brand’s labels across other products can hide differences in dimensions and fit.

Prepare Your Kids’ T-Shirt Sizing Brief

For a sourcing discussion, share the intended style, size range, measurement sheet and reference sample details with Asia Sourcing Limited. You can discuss your kids’ T-shirt requirements and identify the fit or measurement questions still needing agreement before sampling. Keep the selected chart and sample condition with the brief so the next discussion starts from the same information.
